Paul Newman (January 26, 1925 – September 26, 2008) was an American actor, film director, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is considered one of the most iconic actors of the 20th century, known for his piercing blue eyes, chiseled features, and natural talent on the screen.
Newman was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, to Arthur and Theresa Newman. He was the second son of the couple, and his father owned a sporting goods store. Newman graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1943 and joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific theater. After the war, he attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he studied drama and became involved in theater productions.
In 1949, Newman moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. He studied under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio and performed in various plays and live television dramas. His breakthrough role came in 1953 when he appeared in the Broadway production of “Picnic” as the leading man, and he won critical acclaim for his performance.
Newman made his film debut in 1954 in “The Silver Chalice,” but the film was a critical and commercial failure. However, he quickly rebounded with his next film, “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (1956), in which he portrayed boxer Rocky Graziano. The film was a hit, and Newman received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
Throughout his career, Newman appeared in many critically acclaimed and popular films, including “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958), “The Hustler” (1961), “Hud” (1963), “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969). In addition to his acting career, Newman was also an accomplished race car driver and owned a successful racing team. He also founded Newman’s Own, a food company that donates all its profits to charity. Over the years, Newman’s Own has raised more than $500 million for charitable causes.
Newman was married to actress Joanne Woodward from 1958 until his death in 2008. They had three daughters together. Newman passed away on September 26, 2008, at the age of 83 due to lung cancer. He was remembered as a beloved and influential figure in Hollywood and beyond.
