Biography of James Cagney:

Cagney’s father was a bartender, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Cagney showed an interest in performing, and he began taking dance lessons as a child. After finishing high school, he worked briefly as a shipping clerk before pursuing a career in entertainment.

Cagney got his start in show business as a vaudeville performer, dancing and doing impressions. In 1929, he made his Broadway debut in the musical “Penny Arcade.” He soon caught the eye of Hollywood producers, and in 1930 he made his film debut in “Sinner’s Holiday.”

Over the next two decades, Cagney became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, known for his tough-guy persona and fast-paced, energetic performances. He starred in numerous films, including “The Public Enemy” (1931), “Angels with Dirty Faces” (1938), “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942), and “White Heat” (1949).

In addition to his acting career, Cagney was also a devoted activist and philanthropist. He was an outspoken critic of McCarthyism and a supporter of civil rights. He was also involved in numerous charitable causes, including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital.
