George grew up in a middle-class family. Lucas developed an interest in filmmaking during his high school years, and went on to study film at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. While there, he made several short films, including “THX 1138 4EB,” which became the basis for his first feature film, “THX 1138.”
In 1971, Lucas founded his own production company, Lucasfilm Ltd., and began work on his second feature film, “American Graffiti.” The film was a critical and commercial success, and helped launch the careers of several young actors, including Ron Howard and Harrison Ford.
Lucas’s next project was the creation of the Star Wars franchise, which began with the release of the first film, “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope,” in 1977. The film was a massive success, and went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time. In addition to his work on the Star Wars franchise, Lucas also created the Indiana Jones franchise, which began with the release of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981. The film, which starred Harrison Ford as the adventurer Indiana Jones, was a huge success, and was followed by several sequels.
In addition to his work in film, Lucas has been involved in a number of other business ventures, including the creation of the special effects company Industrial Light and Magic, and the video game company LucasArts.
Lucas retired from filmmaking in 2012, and sold his company, Lucasfilm Ltd., to Disney for over $4 billion. However, his impact on the film industry, and popular culture as a whole, continues to be felt to this day.
