He is the younger brother of actor Randy Quaid.

Quaid attended the University of Houston where he studied drama. He made his film debut in 1975 in the comedy-drama film “Crazy Mama.” However, it was his role in the 1979 film “Breaking Away” that brought him critical acclaim. He played a college student in the film and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Quaid’s career continued to flourish in the 1980s and 1990s, with memorable roles in films such as “The Right Stuff,” “The Big Easy,” “Innerspace,” and “Great Balls of Fire!” He also earned critical acclaim for his performance in the 1998 film “The Parent Trap” where he played the father of twin girls.
