Cornell was born in Seattle, Washington, and grew up in a musical family. He started playing drums at the age of six and later learned to play guitar and piano. He formed his first band, The Shemps, while he was still in high school, and went on to join the band Soundgarden in 1984.
Soundgarden released their debut album, Ultramega OK, in 1988, and quickly became one of the most popular bands of the Seattle music scene, along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam. They released several successful albums throughout the 1990s, including Badmotorfinger and Superunknown, which included hits like “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman.”
In 2001, Cornell joined forces with former members of Rage Against the Machine to form the supergroup Audioslave. They released three albums and had several hits, including “Like a Stone” and “Be Yourself.” Cornell also released several successful solo albums, including Euphoria Morning and Higher Truth.
In addition to his musical career, Cornell was also known for his philanthropic work. He was involved with several charities, including the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation, which helps vulnerable children and families.
Cornell was found dead in his hotel room in Detroit on May 18, 2017, at the age of 52. The cause of death was determined to be suicide by hanging. His death was a shock to the music world, and he was mourned by fans and fellow musicians alike.
