Burt Lancaster was an American actor, producer, and director who was born on November 2, 1913, in New York, United States.

His parents were Elizabeth Roberts and James Henry Lancaster, who was a postal worker.

Lancaster grew up in East Harlem and attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx. He later attended New York University on a basketball scholarship but dropped out to join the circus as an acrobat. After a brief stint in the circus, he returned to New York and began studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse.

Lancaster made his film debut in the 1946 film “The Killers,” which was based on a story by Ernest Hemingway. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in the film. He went on to star in several other notable films, including “From Here to Eternity” (1953), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, “The Birdman of Alcatraz” (1962), and “Atlantic City” (1980).

In addition to his acting career, Lancaster was also a producer and helped found the production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster. The company produced several successful films, including “Marty” (1955), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Lancaster was also a political activist and supported several causes, including civil rights and nuclear disarmament. He was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and participated in several anti-war protests.

Lancaster was married three times and had five children. He died on October 20, 1994, in Century City, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 80, from a heart attack.
