Biography of Billy Crystal:

Crystal grew up in Long Beach, New York, where he attended Long Beach High School. He then attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, on a baseball scholarship but later transferred to New York University, where he studied film and television directing.

In the early 1970s, Crystal started his career as a stand-up comedian in New York City. He gained national attention as a regular on the TV series “Soap” (1977-1981), where he played the openly gay character Jodie Dallas. He then starred in the spin-off series “Billy” (1979), which lasted only one season.

Crystal’s breakthrough film role came in 1984 with “This Is Spinal Tap,” a mockumentary about a fictional rock band. He went on to star in a series of successful comedies, including “Running Scared” (1986), “The Princess Bride” (1987), and “When Harry Met Sally” (1989), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.
